How to Start a Car Detailing Business

Car detailing is one of the easier service businesses to enter. You don’t need a big workshop or a lot of staff, and car owners keep coming back. Here is how to begin.

1. Pick your model

You have two realistic options. A mobile setup means you travel to customers with your equipment, which keeps costs low. A fixed studio costs more but lets you offer bigger jobs like ceramic coating and paint correction. Many owners start mobile and move into a studio once bookings are steady.

2. Learn the craft first

Customers pay for results, so skill matters more than equipment. Take a professional course or work under an experienced detailer for a few months. Practice on friends’ cars until you can handle swirl marks, interior stains and polishing without damaging the paint.

3. Buy the essentials

A basic kit includes a pressure washer, a vacuum, a dual-action polisher, microfiber towels, foam cannon, pads, shampoo, interior cleaners and wax or sealant. Buy decent quality, but don’t overspend before you have regular clients.

4. Price your services in tiers

Offer a simple range: exterior wash, interior deep clean, full detailing, polishing, and ceramic coating as the premium option. Packages make it easy for customers to choose, and they make it easy for you to upsell.

5. Get customers

Start with a Google Business profile, an Instagram page full of before-and-after photos, and a WhatsApp number for bookings. Visit housing societies, offer a discounted first wash, and ask every happy customer for a review. Local word of mouth is your strongest marketing.

Investment and profit (rough estimates)

These figures are approximate and vary by city and equipment quality.

  • Mobile setup: about ₹1.5 to ₹4 lakh for equipment, products, a vehicle for transport and basic branding.
  • Small studio: about ₹10 to ₹25 lakh, covering rent deposit, a wash bay, lighting, tools and interiors.
  • Typical earnings per car: ₹1,500 to ₹5,000 for a standard detail. Ceramic coating can bring ₹15,000 to ₹40,000 or more.
  • Margins: often 40 to 60 percent on services, since your main costs are products and labor.
